Company overview

About US Dollar Index

The US Dollar Index, commonly known as the DXY or USDX, measures the value of the US dollar against a weighted basket of six major currencies, with the euro accounting for the largest weighting at approximately 57.6%. Other constituent currencies include the Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc. The index provides a broad, real-time gauge of dollar strength or weakness across the global currency market.

Because the dollar serves as the world's primary reserve currency, the USDX is closely watched by traders across asset classes, including equities, commodities, and bonds. A rising index generally indicates dollar strength, which tends to weigh on commodity prices denominated in dollars, such as gold and oil, while a falling index can support risk assets and emerging-market currencies.

The index was first established in 1973 following the collapse of the Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate system and has since become one of the most referenced benchmarks in global financial markets. Its composition has remained largely unchanged since 1999, when the euro replaced several European legacy currencies.

Price drivers

What moves US Dollar Index

The forces that move the US Dollar Index (USDX) price — and what every trader should keep an eye on.

  • 01

    Federal Reserve Policy

Fed interest-rate decisions, forward guidance, and quantitative tightening or easing programmes are the primary drivers of the US Dollar Index.

  • 02

    US Economic Data

Non-farm payrolls, CPI inflation, GDP growth, and retail sales directly influence market expectations for Fed policy and therefore dollar demand.

  • 03

    Euro Area Conditions

Because the euro comprises the largest weight in the basket, ECB policy and eurozone economic data have an outsized influence on the index relative to other constituents.

  • 04

    Global Risk Sentiment

The dollar often attracts safe-haven flows during global stress; risk-off conditions typically lift the USDX, while improved risk appetite can weaken it.

  • 05

    US Fiscal and Trade Policy

Government spending, debt ceiling negotiations, and trade tariffs can affect long-term confidence in dollar assets, influencing the index over the medium term.

Frequently asked questions

US Dollar Index — questions

The live US Dollar Index level is displayed in the interactive chart above and updates continuously through the trading week. The index reflects real-time dollar strength against its basket of major currencies, so check the current bid/ask on the live chart before placing a trade.

Because the dollar is the world's primary reserve currency and most commodities are priced in dollars, the USDX acts as a barometer for global financial conditions. A stronger dollar typically pressures commodity prices, weighs on emerging-market assets, and can tighten financial conditions globally, while a weaker dollar has broadly the opposite effect.
