About Sugar

Sugar No. 11 is the international benchmark for raw cane sugar, quoted in US cents per pound and traded on ICE Futures US, reflecting the global balance of cane and beet sugar supply against consumption.

Brazil is by far the world's largest producer and exporter of cane sugar, and its domestic decision on how much cane to divert towards ethanol production rather than sugar has a direct bearing on the global supply available for export.

India, the European Union, and Thailand are other significant producers, and monsoon performance, government price supports, and export policies in these regions can all introduce meaningful supply-side uncertainty.

What Moves Sugar

  • Brazilian Production & Ethanol Mix

The proportion of Brazilian cane crushed for ethanol versus sugar shifts with energy prices and domestic policy, directly affecting how much raw sugar enters the world market.

  • Weather in Key Producing Regions

Monsoon performance in India, drought in Brazil, or adverse weather in Thailand can reduce cane yields and tighten global supply, often triggering rapid price adjustments.

  • Energy & Crude Oil Prices

Higher crude oil prices make ethanol production more profitable in Brazil, incentivising mills to divert more cane away from sugar and reducing global supply.

  • Export Policies & Government Intervention

India periodically introduces export restrictions or subsidies to manage domestic prices, and these policy decisions can move the global market given the scale of Indian production.

  • US Dollar Strength

Sugar is priced in US dollars, so currency movements affect the purchasing power of importers and can influence global trade flows and benchmark price levels.

SugarQuestions

How much is Sugar live price today?

The live price is shown in the chart above and updates throughout the trading session. Sugar prices can shift on weather developments, energy price moves, and export policy announcements, so check the live chart and current bid/ask before opening a trade.

Can I trade sugar with leverage?

Yes. With Centrino Capital, eligible clients can trade sugar as a commodity CFD with flexible leverage and transparent margin requirements. Sugar can be a volatile market and leverage magnifies both gains and losses, so make sure you understand the risks of CFD trading before proceeding.

Why are Brazilian ethanol prices relevant to the sugar market?

Brazilian sugar mills have the flexibility to process cane into either sugar or ethanol depending on which is more profitable. When crude oil and domestic fuel prices are high, mills favour ethanol production, which reduces the volume of sugar exported globally and tends to support prices.

What role does India play in the global sugar market?

India is one of the world's largest producers and consumers of sugar, and its government periodically adjusts export quotas and subsidies in response to domestic supply conditions. When India restricts exports to protect its own food prices, global supply tightens and international prices can rise.

Do I receive physical sugar when I trade SUGAR?

No. A sugar CFD tracks the price of the Sugar No. 11 futures contract without any obligation to take delivery of the physical commodity. You speculate on price direction, going long or short according to your market view.
