About Cocoa

Cocoa is quoted in US dollars per metric tonne on ICE Futures US and is the primary raw material for chocolate, with global demand underpinned by confectionery consumption across Europe, North America, and increasingly Asia.

West Africa, principally Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, supplies the majority of the world's cocoa beans, making the market uniquely concentrated on the supply side and highly responsive to growing conditions and crop disease in that region.

Because substitution options are limited and chocolate demand tends to be relatively stable, supply shocks in West Africa can produce outsized and prolonged price moves, as the market demonstrated in recent years.

What Moves Cocoa

  • West African Weather

Rainfall patterns, harmattan winds, and temperature conditions in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana during the main and mid-crop seasons are the most critical near-term supply variables.

  • Crop Disease & Pests

Swollen shoot virus and black pod disease can significantly reduce yields across West African plantations, and outbreaks receive close attention from traders monitoring supply prospects.

  • Seasonal Crop Reports

Mid-crop and main-crop arrivals data from Ivorian and Ghanaian ports provide market participants with real-time signals on whether production is tracking above or below expectations.

  • Global Chocolate Demand

Consumption trends in Europe and North America, combined with rising demand from emerging markets in Asia, set the demand baseline against which supply shortfalls or surpluses are measured.

  • Currency & Government Policy

Cocoa-selling policies in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, including forward sales programmes and government floor prices, affect the timing and volume of supply reaching the world market.

CocoaQuestions

How much is Cocoa live price today?

The live price is shown in the chart above and updates throughout the trading session. Cocoa can be particularly volatile given the concentration of supply in West Africa, so always check the live chart and current bid/ask before opening a trade.

Can I trade cocoa with leverage?

Yes. With Centrino Capital, eligible clients can trade cocoa as a commodity CFD with flexible leverage and transparent margin requirements. Cocoa has demonstrated the capacity for very large price swings, and leverage can substantially amplify both gains and losses, making a full understanding of CFD risk essential before trading.

Why is cocoa supply so concentrated and why does that matter?

Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana together account for a very large share of global cocoa production, meaning that weather events, crop disease, or political disruption in a relatively small geographic area can affect the supply available to chocolate manufacturers worldwide. This concentration is a key reason why cocoa prices can experience sharp and sustained moves compared with more geographically diversified commodities.

What are the main and mid-crop seasons for cocoa?

The main crop in West Africa typically runs from October through March and represents the larger of the two annual harvests. The mid-crop, or light crop, runs from April through September. Arrival data from Ivorian and Ghanaian ports during each season is closely monitored by traders as a guide to how actual production compares with earlier forecasts.

Do I receive physical cocoa when I trade COCOA?

No. A cocoa CFD is a financial contract that tracks the price of the underlying futures market without any delivery of physical beans. You speculate on whether the price will rise or fall, going long or short according to your market view.
